Rules for Powers of 10

Multiplication:
Powers of 10 greater than 1 (10, 100, 1000.......)
Number will become larger.  Move decimal to the right the same number of places as zeros in the power of 10
5.78 x 100 = 57810   2 places

Powers of 10 less than 1 (0.1, 0.01, 0.001......)
Number will always become smaller.  Move decimal to the left the same number of places as decimal places in the power of 10.
5.78 x 0.01 = 0.0578   2 places

Division:
Powers of 10 greater than 1(10, 100, 1000)
Number will become smaller.  Move decimal to the left the same number of places as zeros in the power of 10.
78.6 ÷ 10 = 7.86   1 place

Powers of 10 less than 1 (0.1, 0.01, 0.001)
Number will become larger.  Move decimal to the right the same number of places as decimal places in the power of 10.
78.6 ÷ 0.1 = 786    1 place

Week of October 21- Math

Monday:  Homework on Multiplication of Powers of 10.  Students will complete even numbered problem on activity sheet.  They should be using their graphic organizer to help with the rules.

Tuesday:  Homework on dividing powers of 10.  Students will complete the even numbered problems.  Decimal division quiz was returned to students.  Errors need to be corrected.  Students receiving below a 70% will retake quiz on Thursday 10/24.

Wednesday:    Students will be working on a practice test/study guide in class.  What is not finished will be homework.

Thursday:  Quiz will be given to students needing to retake.  Others will be completing enrichment activities using task cards.

Friday:  Unit Test.  Tested skills:  adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals.

Week of 10/14/13

This week our Math classes will continue working on dividing decimals.  We are reviewing daily all of our decimal operations as well.  Homework will be very limited this week as the students are taking Meap on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Below is our agenda for the week as well as a peek into next week.
Math Agenda 10/14-10/18
Monday-

  • Students are learning how to divide decimals by decimals.  
  • Two homework assignments were given, decimal review due on Wednesday and Common Core activity due Friday.


Tuesday-  

  • Math Meap.  
  • Continue practice with dividing decimals.
  • Compare steps to the different decimal operations graphic organizer.


Wednesday-

  •  Social Studies Meap.  
  • Decimal Review homework due.
  • Introduce multiplying powers of 10

Thursday-

  • Practice multiplying powers of 10
  • Introduce dividing powers of 10
  • Create a foldable for  powers of 10
  • Powers of 10 homework

Friday-

  • Common Core homework activity from Monday due.
  • Continue to practice powers of 10.
  • Dividing decimal quiz
Next Week:
Unit 1 Test Friday 10/25.  We will take a practice test as homework on Tuesday 10/22.
